This film is the final part of ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’, an acting for film and script development course developed & run by Beverley Jordan in association with Cinema Plus. This project was directed and filmed by myself & Tracy G Williams (Tracy Island TV) in a professional environment during the summer of 2011. The realised script was shot and edited in three days. The completed movie was then screened at Cinema City, Norwich. During May 2012 it was part of the Showcomotion Film Festival in Sheffield and was shown on the big screen. In June 2012 it was also invited to be part of the BBC’s Children and Young Persons Film Festival. (copy of script available below)
‘An revalationary experience that three teenagers will remember for the rest of their lives. Perception of life and the future is changed forever by an unexpected experience with the past.’
Kathryn MacWilliams 1629-1644
A vibrant independent Kathryn rebelled against the Puritans. This led to rumours and accusations of witchcraft and treason against the state. Kathryn’s family did not wish for her to be hanged but they also did not wish for their reputation to be tarred so they took the decision to lock her in a secret room. Friends, family and officials were told that she had disappeared. Out of sight and out of mind, Kathryn was forgotten.
The worse phase of witch-hunting hysteria and witch accusations in England took place in East Anglia during the English Civil Wars (1642 – 1649) Witches were hanged in England not burnt at the stake. All characters in this film are fictious.
‘Silenced’ was conceived following a course entitled ‘Camera, Lights, Action’ which looked at professional performance and script disciplines for film. The course was the first one of its kind in Norfolk and was run by professional practitioners in partnership with Cinema Plus, Cinema City, Norwich for 5 days during August 2012.
‘Silenced’ is a twelve and a half minute film that was born out of a four day workshop that developed skills required for acting in front of and writing for the camera – including the importance of continuity, understanding film semiotics, storyboarding, script writing skills and characterisation. During the course a story and characters were developed and subsequently written into a film script called ‘Silenced’. After locations were chosen, the script was then rehearsed on location and lines learnt. ‘Silenced’ was then filmed in a professional environment thus giving students not only the opportunity to put their acquired skills into action but also to take direction under the pressure of being filmed.
